Bridal Veil Falls Day 16: North to Alaska

June 27, 2008 - Valdez to Destruction Bay

Long tough day. Really needed to get going fairly early, but had some business to attend to on the web so that didn't happen. 10:00 before I got on the road. Cold and wet leaving Valdez, clouds swirling around the mountains. Got a little clearer about 40 miles out, and was able to make decent time to Tok. After Tok, I found out where the all the construction was on the Al-Can. Between Tok and Destruction Bay. Lots of dirt and gravel, a few stops waiting for pilot cars. Slowed things waaay down.

After crossing into Canada weather got colder and the rain started, heavy at times. Then that quit and it got incredibly windy the rest of the way in. With the late start, delays and the time change it was 9:00 before I stopped, only 490 done. Have I whined enough yet. :) Really it wasn't that bad, and there were some bright spots. Saw a porcupine waddling across the road not far from Valdez, that was unexpected. And shortly after getting into Canada had not 1 but 2 bald eagles soar low across the road right in front of me. Also had some great views of some of the biggest peaks in Canada, Logan, Wood, Luciania and others.

Dodged a couple of tickets too. Between Glenallen and Tok I'd been running 70-75, limit is 55. Shortly before Tok a car passed me, first one that had. 3 miles later he gets to chat with Mr. Trooper. Felt bad for him, but was glad it was him taking one for the team and not me. :) Another trooper 20 miles from the border had a guy pulled over, so he wasn't free to nail me. Whew!!!

Got a room in Destruction Bay at a gas/motel/restaurant/bar/store place, don't remember the name. Hadn't eaten all day, so figured I'd grab a burger or something before the restaurant closed. Walked in and the special was veal parmigiana. Took a chance and wadda ya know, it was really good. Came with broccoli, corn and plain spaghetti pasta with just a little butter and parsley. Could of used some garlic though, need to start carrying my own.:)
