Hwy 120 Day 4: North to Alaska

June 15, 2008 - Cody, WY to Kalispell, MT

It was one of those days.....one of those days where all was was right with the world, the heavens opened, the angels sang and lion laid down with the lamb. OK, maybe not that good, but it was a damn fine day to be on a motorcycle.

Got out of Cody late (are we detecting a trend??) about 8:45AM. Part of the delay was deciding which way to go. The original plan was to take 120 up to 296 and then to US 212, over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge. 212 was closed though due to ice and drifting snow, so that was out. Looking at the map, knowing I needed to be in Kalispell tonight, I was really tempted to go through Yellowstone and then North to I-90. That minimized the amount of interstate, and obviously going through Yellowstone has value. If it have been an hour earlier that's probably what I would have done, but the traffic really builds in the park in the late morning and I didn't want to chance a major delay.

So I went with a modified version of the original, took 120 over the Montana line to 308 and over to Red Lodge. Good decision. Fabulous road, breathtaking scenery. And it just kept going, 78 from Red Lodge to Columbus, I-90 to past Missoula and then 93 up to Kalispell. The whole way it was gorgeous, lush valleys, rivers, forests, carpets of wildflowers, and snowcapped mountains hanging over all of it. Weather was perfect, little wind, temps in the high 50s to low 70s, crystal clear blue skys. Even guessed right on clothes, didn't have to add or shed anything all day. If anything, the last stretch was the best. 93 north through the Mission valley is incredible, and then you hit Flathead Lake which was wonderful.

Only downside is that I couldn't take anywhere near as many pictures as I would have liked to. If I had I'd have only done 250 miles instead of 550.

Tomorrow, into Canada!! :)
